Chevrolet has just made waves in the performance car world with a new owner retention policy for the upcoming 2025 Corvette ZR1. The news, first shared on the YouTube channel of Corvette expert Rick "Corvette" Conti, reveals that General Motors is taking a stronger stance against vehicle flipping-and they're backing it with written policy.

GM Extends Retention to 12 Months for ZR1, Confirms 6-Month Policy for Z06 and E-Ray

According to Conti's video and reporting from Corvette Blogger, GM has issued an official letter to dealers outlining its updated stance on ownership requirements for high-demand Corvette models.

The biggest change? ZR1 Corvette buyers will now be required to retain ownership of their vehicle for 12 months before selling it-or face potential consequences, including:

  • Ineligibility to purchase future limited-edition or high-demand GM vehicles, and
  • Possible reduction or limitation of warranty coverage for any subsequent owner if the vehicle is sold before the 12-month mark.

In the same letter, GM also clarified the retention policy for the Corvette Z06 and E-Ray models, confirming that both still carry a 6-month retention period for original owners.

These policies are designed to protect the integrity of the brand and ensure vehicles are getting into the hands of true enthusiasts-not resellers or speculators looking to flip for profit.

Why Retention Periods Matter

The 2025 Corvette ZR1 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated supercars of the decade. With rumored specs including massive horsepower gains and unique aero enhancements, GM knows demand will be sky-high.

By requiring owners to keep the vehicle for a set period, GM aims to deter flipping and inflated resale prices, a problem that has plagued other performance car launches in recent years. While many enthusiasts appreciate the move, others have noted that dealer markups-often far above MSRP-are still not being addressed by these policies.

Still, the message from GM is clear: buy it because you love it, not because you want to flip it.
