Top 5 Infotainment Systems in Mass Market Cars

A Guide for Used Car Buyers

At Central Vermont Auto Mart, we know from our own experiences that today's drivers expect more than just getting from point A to point B. The modern vehicle has become a mobile command center, and at the heart of this evolution is the infotainment system. Our team has done the homework, diving deep into the mass-market car brands to bring you a list of the top infotainment systems available in today's vehicles.  One of the advantages of working for a used car dealership is the opportunity to drive hundreds of cars and actually had the opportunity to try the various infotainment systems in the various late model vehicles available to customers today.

Understanding Infotainment Systems vs. Traditional Audio Systems

An infotainment system in modern vehicles transcends the traditional audio system by integrating entertainment, navigation, communication, and vehicle information into a unified interface. While audio systems primarily manage media playback, infotainment systems offer a comprehensive suite of features, including GPS navigation, smartphone integration, voice commands, and access to various applications. This integration enhances driver convenience and safety by centralizing control of multiple functions. While audio systems primarily handle media playback, infotainment systems offer a comprehensive suite of features, including:

  • GPS navigation
  • Smartphone integration (e.g., Apple CarPlay and Android Auto)
  • Voice commands
  • Vehicle settings and information displays
  • Access to apps for music streaming, news, and more

This integration enhances driver convenience and safety by centralizing control of multiple functions. In essence, an infotainment system is your vehicle's command center, providing information and entertainment at your fingertips.

Top Infotainment Systems in Mass-Market Vehicles

We evaluated several popular systems in late model vehicles, considering the following criteria:

  • Ease of Use - Is the system user-friendly and intuitive?
  • Features - What features are offered, and how well do they integrate?
  • Display Clarity - Is the display easy to read.
  • Intuitive Design & Touchscreen Responsiveness - Does the touchscreen respond quickly and accurately to touch, and is the layout logical?
Whether you're commuting to work, running errands around the Barre-Montpelier area, or heading out on a road trip, having a reliable and enjoyable infotainment system can make all the difference. Here's our roundup of the best infotainment systems we found in mass-market vehicles.

#1. Stellantis Uconnect 5

Ease of Use: User-friendly interface with customizable tile layout. Features: Integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; supports multiple user profiles. Display: High-resolution touchscreen with clear visuals. Design & Responsiveness: Intuitive design with quick touchscreen response. Availability: Featured in brands like Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram. In fact, this system is so good Stellantis uses it in their high-end brands like Maserati and Alfa Romeo.  Each generation of Uconnect has improved upon their successful system.  Even with the earlier versions of Uconnect all offered a very user-friendly interface.  Many of our staff remarked how pleased they were with this system in their own Ram 1500s and Jeep vehicles.

#2. Ford SYNC 4

Ease of Use: Simplified menus with voice recognition capabilities. Features: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; over-the-air updates. Display: Available with large touchscreens up to 12 inches. Design & Responsiveness: Clean design with swift system responses. Availability: Found in vehicles such as the Ford vehicles like the F-150 and Ford Mustang.  Also used in Lincoln's line up of luxury vehicles.  Sync 4 is a great improvement over the previous SYNC 3 system which seemed to be lacking in its ability to translate common voice commands when using the system. One of our staff reported that the previous generation of SYNC used in his wife's Lincoln MKC caused frustration, as you ended up in yelling at it to try and get it to recognize voice commands.

#3. Hyundai/Kia Infotainment System

Ease of Use: Straightforward interface with large icons. Features: Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; available navigation and connected services. Display: Touchscreens range in various sizes depending upon the model they are installed in. Design & Responsiveness: Minimalist design with responsive touch inputs.  Recent news articles have mentioned that Hyundai has surveyed customers and found that they are looking for straight forward systems, including some customers have actually indicated that certain features would be better if they were removed from the info center and returned to the dash as a standalone button.  One of our staff members mentioned they find the infotainment center in their Hyundai Tucson his top choice from his experience.

#4. General Motors Infotainment System

Ease of Use: Smartphone-like interface with customizable home screen. Features: Integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; available 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Display: Touchscreens varying from 7 to 8 inches, with larger options in select models. Design & Responsiveness: Logical layout with prompt responsiveness.  General Motors has been making some changes to their systems over the last couple of years and it has caused some concern with its customer base.  One of our staff complains that his Chevrolet's factory navigation choice is to either used Google Maps, Android Auto with Google Maps or On-Star Navigation.  He has to purchase a subscription to use two of these choices.  Cell service or lack of effects using Google Map solutions.

GM has announced that its next-generation infotainment systems will no longer include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.  Auto Manufacturers don't like that they spend millions developing their systems only to have customers cast their phone onto the system. We have heard customers already comment about having to pay subscriptions for features on their GM vehicle that would have been available at no charge on other brands products and this change could increase subscription fees for GM. Time will tell how this idea plays out.

#5. Toyota Entune 3.0

Read about Toyota's Entune 3.0 infotainment center in their vehicles.Ease of Use: Simple interface with physical buttons for key functions. Features: Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility; available navigation. Display: Touchscreens typically around 8 inches. Design & Responsiveness: User-friendly design with reliable performance. Availability: Included in models like the Toyota Camry and Toyota RAV4.  Several of our team members at our used car dealership in Montpelier Vermont reported that the info centers in used Toyota's have been some of the easiest systems to pair their phone with and start using both the functionality of their phone and the applications that come with the factory information center.  Their comments include statements such as "Very straight forward..."

Honorable Mentions: Infotainment Systems in Luxury Vehicles

While our focus is on mass-market brands, it is worth mentioning some standout systems in luxury vehicles. Brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi continue to push the boundaries of infotainment technology. BMW's iDrive, Mercedes-Benz's MBUX, and Audi's MMI systems are leaders in innovation, offering cutting-edge features and exceptional user experiences.

Upcoming Trends in Infotainment Systems

The automotive industry is witnessing a surge in infotainment innovations aimed at enhancing user experience.  - Artificial intelligence (AI) driven assistants are becoming standard, learning driver preferences to provide personalized suggestions and automate routine tasks. - Augmented reality (AR) Displays are being introduced by the manufacturers. AR features, projecting navigational cues and vital information directly onto the windshield to improve driver awareness and safety. These will be a vast improvement from the older "Heads Up" displays found in some of today's used cars. - Enhanced connectivity, with a growing emphasis on seamless smartphone integration, real-time updates, and access to a broader range of applications, ensuring drivers remain connected while minimizing distractions.  The future for vehicle infotainment systems looks promising.
